Hall of mirrors.
As Martha Beck explains in her book, Beyond Anxiety, anxiety creates a hall of mirrors inside our brains.
One stimulus makes us afraid, and the internal mirror reflects it to make up another thing we can be afraid of. Soon, these reflections compound with each triggering the amygdala (fear centre) again and again.
Soon, the hall of mirrors seems like the reality that we live in.
But that's an illusion. Just like the hall of mirrors in an amusement park.
What helps us get out of it is either a friend who helps us out or finding an exit sign to break the illusion.
It's no fun to be in the anxiety hall of mirrors. If you are stuck in one, ask a friend to help you get out. Or try to find the exit sign. The truths in your life that you can hold onto as you navigate your way out.
